Update: Leaving New York City

Hi all!

Can you believe my 5 months in New York are almost over?! In fact, I’m flying back next Thursday. I didn’t have the time to keep this blog updated during the past months but instead, I did get to make some amazing memories.

I met so many new people during my time here and I am so thankful for each and every one of them. Not only did I experience what it’s like to work in New York’s fashion world, but I also experienced what it’s actually like to live in this overwhelming city.

Penn Station, 34th Street

When I arrived in New York, I was convinced that I wanted to change myself and be an entirely different person when I return. That was my main goal. Truth is, I didn’t even change that much. However, I did learn a lot about myself. Even though I stayed with family, I learned what it’s like to be on my own and be responsible for myself. I must admit, it was scary sometimes and there have definitely been some moments where I just didn’t feel like I belonged here. Then I realized, I came all this way to New York for a reason and I’m not going to let some intimidating thoughts get the best of me. I had a great opportunity and I took it, I am living my dream and I don’t want to spend my time regretting it.

Another good thing that came from New York is that I picked up my reading and writing again. The two things I used to love the most. A while ago, I told myself I didn’t have the time anymore to read books or write stories. Yet the first thing I did when I came to New York was going to Barnes&Nobles and buy a book. Even though I didn’t read for months, I felt like I needed to have a book close to me. Every time I needed a break, I’d grab this book and just read a little and it would make me feel calm again. I kept making up excuses for not doing the things I loved most, which is as silly as it sounds, I am so glad I’m realizing that now.

During my time here, I also found myself becoming more and more social. I always used to avoid small-talk and conversations with strangers, but in New York it just became normal and I even ended up making some great friends because of it.

I am forever grateful for having the opportunity to move to New York, for the incredibly kind and inspiring people I met here and for the great memories. The past few months have taught me the art of surviving on my own. It has been an amazing, unforgettable journey and even though I haven’t left yet, I can’t wait to return.

Quite simply, I was in love with New York. I do not mean ‘love’ in any colloquial way, I mean that I was in love with the city, the way you love the first person who ever touches you and you never love anyone quite that way again.

1. La Vie Est Belle – Lancôme ($$$)

Buying a fragrance as a gift is always a little risky. What if they don’t like it?  Tastes differ, and especially fragrances make people quite picky.

Lancôme has introduced La Vie Est Schermafbeelding 2017-12-13 om 16.18.32.pngBelle many years ago but it has never been such a hype until now. Throughout the years La Vie Est Belle has become Lancôme’s signature fragrance and because of its popularity, Lancôme decided to introduce a few more:

  • The original La Vie Est Belle
  • La Vie Est Belle L’éclat
  • La Vie Est Belle Absolu
  • La Vie Est Belle Intense
  • La Vie Est Belle légere

La Vie Est Belle might not be the cheapest Christmas gift but I can assure you, you’ll make someone really happy… Schermafbeelding 2017-12-13 om 16.16.07

2.  Pandora jewelry ($$)

The Pandora jewelry collection for 2017 has been more popular than ever. The rings, in particular, were the #1 go-to gifts men bought for a special woman in their life.  Whether it’s for an anniversary, birthday or in this case, Christmas, these rings will always make someone’s eyes twinkle.

3. Clinique skincare products ($$-$$$)

Whether you want to buy something for him or for her, Clinique will take you out of your misery. Clinique offers a wide range of products for men and women, and even if their original-sized products are out of your budget, you could still go for their cheaper skincare gift sets (which, I think, are more fun to receive)!

4. Portable speakers ($-$$)

Music has become a big part of our lives these days. Some listen to it all day and some only once in a while, but that doesn’t take away the fact that portable speakers are a great gift. There are a lot of different portable speakers out there, from cute, small ones to bigger ones that look like a radio.  Who wouldn’t like to receive a little portable speaker for Christmas? Exactly…

GUESS is a luxury brand but also offers the most fashionable clutches and crossbody-bags for less than $100. I think any woman would love to receive a GUESS bag for Christmas, am I right?
